WHAT IS A GENERATOR?

A home generator is a device that can provide electricity for your home when the main power source is unavailable, such as during a blackout, a storm, or a natural disaster. Home generators can be powered by different types of fuel, such as gasoline, natural gas, propane, or solar energy. Home generators can be classified into two main categories: portable generators and standby generators.

PORTABLE GENERATOR

Portable generators are usually gasoline-powered and can run for a few hours on a single tank of fuel. Portable generators are cheaper and easier to install than standby generators, but they have some drawbacks, such as noise, maintenance, and carbon monoxide emission. Portable generators should be used outside, away from windows and doors, and with proper ventilation.

STANDBY GENERATOR

standby generator is a large and permanent device that is installed on your property and connected to your home’s electrical panel and fuel source. Standby generators can be powered by natural gas, propane, or diesel, and can automatically turn on when the main power goes out. Standby generators can supply electricity for your entire home or selected circuits, depending on the size and capacity of the generator. Standby generators are more expensive and require professional installation and maintenance, but they offer more reliability, convenience, and safety than portable generators.

WHAT IS A TRANSFER SWITCH?

Generator transfer switches are devices that allow you to switch between the power supplied by your utility company and the power generated by your standby generator. They are essential for ensuring that your home or business has a reliable source of backup power during an outage. There are many types of generator transfer switches available on the market, ranging from manual switches to automatic switches that can detect outages and start the generator without human intervention.

AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH

The generator automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a device that connects your home to a standby generator. It automatically switches the power source from the utility to the generator during a power outage and back to the utility when power is restored. These are much more expensive and require much larger generators that are permanently installed on a concrete pad. 

MANUAL TRANSFER PANEL

generator manual transfer panel is a device that allows you to manually switch your home’s power source from the utility to a generator during a power outage. This setup eliminates the need for multiple extension cords and allows you to power hardwired appliances like your gas furnace, well pump, and other critical loads. It’s a cost-effective and simpler alternative to automatic transfer switches, but it requires someone to be present to operate it. (Note: this is a suitable option for homes with Split-bus style panels where an interlock/inlet is not compatible.)

SINGLE CIRCUIT TRANSFER SWITCH

generator single circuit transfer switch is a device that allows you to manually switch single electrical circuit from the utility to a generator during a power outage. This type of switch is ideal for powering essential appliances or systems, such as a gas furnace other 120-volt loads/circuits, without needing to power the entire house.

INTERLOCK WITH AN INLET

An interlock with an inlet is a system designed to safely connect a portable generator or battery system to your home’s electrical system during a power outage. It includes an interlock kit installed in your electrical panel, which ensures that the main breaker and the generator/battery breaker cannot be on simultaneously, preventing dangerous backfeeding. Additionally, a power inlet box is installed outside your home, where you plug in the generator/battery. This box connects to your electrical panel through a dedicated circuit. When using the generator/battery, you plug it into the power inlet box, switch off the main breaker, and switch on the generator/battery breaker using the interlock kit. This setup allows you to safely power essential circuits in your home with the generator or battery backup. (Note: some panels (split bus) can’t use interlocks and have to use a sub-panel or potentially replace your main electrical panel.)
